Baby with spots barred from BA plane

A baby girl with a rare condition which produces spots on her skin was barred from traveling on a British Airways flight until her mother could prove she was not contagious.
One-year-old Stephanie Brown, from Mirfield, West Yorks, suffers from a strain of pediatric Diffuse Cutaneous Mastocytosis (DCM) in which itchy spots and hives can appear on the skin.
The little-known condition, the result of the body producing too many of a type of blood cell called mast cells, is not contagious.

Small Bits of News You Didn’t Know you Needed

Thousands of Shoes on Miami Highway
The Florida Highway Patrol received the report during rush hour Friday morning, Lt. Pat Santangelo said. A private contractor brought a front-end loader and a dump truck to the half-mile stretch of highway. Workers were able to clear at least one lane after a short time by sweeping all the shoes to shoulder, but delays were expected to last until all the shoes could be removed.
Santangelo said the shoes appear to be used, and most were tied together in pairs. He says he's looking for a charity to take the shoes, rather than sending them to the dump.
Santangelo says he's not sure where the shoes came from. There were no signs of a crash, and no one stopped to claim them.

'Hello, 911? I'm Driving Drunk'
North Dakota police get rare phone call from 17-year-old girl reporting herself driving under the influence
Police get calls about drunken drivers all the time, but rarely do they come from the alleged offender.
A 17-year-old girl in Bismarck called 911 on New Year's Eve "to report herself driving under the influence," police Lt. Randy Ziegler said. "I've never heard of such a thing happening, and neither has anyone here."
The girl told authorities her location shortly before midnight Wednesday and officers found her in a parked car near downtown, Ziegler said. She failed a sobriety test and was arrested for failing to have control of her vehicle while intoxicated.
The girl, whose name was not released because of her age, was not cited for drunken driving, Ziegler said.
"Her keys were in her purse and she was parked," Ziegler said. "She did tell us that she had been driving around for hours."

Texas Jail Closed for 'Dangerous Conditions,' Guards Could be Indicted
A jail in northern Texas has been closed and its nearly 60 inmates transferred as authorities investigate what they call dangerous conditions for jailers and those behind bars — including cells that locked from the inside or contained recliners.
Five inmates had already been moved from the Montague County jail to one in a nearby county this month after an FBI raid, said Jack McGaughey, district attorney for Montague, Clay and Archer counties.
McGaughey declined to say what prompted the investigation, also being conducted by the Texas Rangers. But he said authorities found contraband in the jail. New Sheriff Paul Cunningham moved the inmates to the Wise County jail on Thursday a few hours after he was sworn in.
McGaughey said some surveillance cameras' cords had been disconnected; recliners were in cells; some bathrooms and cells could be locked from the inside; and inmates had made partitions out of paper towels to block jailers' views inside their cells. One alarming discovery was a type of rack made of nails, he said.
