Zoo study shows you can’t mate two female polar bears

Japanese zoo figure out why polar bears fail to mate because both are female (DUH!)
.
The zoo in the northern city of Kushiro swapped an orangutan for a polar bear cub in January 2005, hoping it would eventually produce offspring with a female bear called Kurumi.
The cub, named Tsuyoshi after the popular baseball slugger Tsuyoshi Shinjo, reached the reproductive age of four last December.
"Even though the rutting season came in spring this year, Tsuyoshi didn't show mating behavior such as chasing after a female bear," said zookeeper Hiroyuki Kubono. "We thought it might be because Tsuyoshi was still too young."
But suspicions deepened when Tsuyoshi was seen urinating just like Kurumi.
"We realized it's really odd," the zookeeper said.
The zoo sent some of Tsuyoshi's hair for a DNA test, the results of which suggested "he" was really a she.
Just to make sure, earlier this month the zoo anesthetized the bear and directly checked its body, said Kubono, adding: "It was female."
The zoo wants a male for mating and is considering swapping Tsuyoshi, but Kubono said she is hugely popular with visitors.
"Tsuyoshi came here when she was a cub and people just love her," he said
It is not an isolated case: Tsuyoshi's "brother," who was adopted by another zoo and turns three this year, has also turned out to be female.
.
Why didn't they check for which sex it was when they swapped to make sure they were getting what they wanted? It would be like not counting money and taking someone else's word.

E-mail error ends up on road sign

The English is clear enough to lorry drivers - but the Welsh reads "I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated."

Groundsman destroys golf course with weedkiller

A golf club's fairways were turned brown after the groundsman accidentally watered the course with industrial strength weedkiller.
The normally lush fairways have been scorched away after the groundsman sprayed them with a chemical usually used to destroy grass growing through pavements and roads.
A total of 11 holes have been ruined at Haywards Heath Golf Club in West Sussex, and will remain rusty brown for months to come. Many members, who pay £1,100 a year, fear that prolonged rain could turn them to mud.

What the ...?

Tuesday the state Division of Motor Vehicles has notified nearly 10,000 holders of license plates with the letter combination. Officials learned last year the common acronym stands for a vulgar phrase in e-mail and cell phone text messages.
But this week, the DMV officials got another surprise when they learned the same letters appeared on the agency's own Web site on a sample personalized plate.
"I can't believe it," DMV Commissioner Bill Gore said Monday when told about the online glitch. "Obviously, I didn't know it was there."
Officials are removing the sample plate.

Maybe he needs a driver not a license

A man who had just been pulled over by police ran backwards over a Buffalo Grove squad car Friday morning, apparently in haste to drive off.
Henry Raskin, 70, of Niles had been pulled over by a Buffalo Grove officer on the 400 block of Dundee Road around 11:30 a.m. Friday for driving 58 mph in a 35 mph zone, Sgt. Scott Kristiansen said.
The officer wrote the ticket and returned to the car, and Raskin got ready to drive away. Except he went flying backward.
"(He) apparently was going to pull away at a high rate of speed, but the only problem was that he was in reverse," Kristiansen said.
He said Raskin was not happy about getting a ticket. He said police are reviewing the squad car videotape to see what Raskin might also be charged with.

Speed limit signs puzzle drivers

Motorists were left confused when council workers erected two signs with different speed limits at the entrance to a road. One sign in residential Stratton Road, Chorlton, Manchester,
read 30mph but the other read 20mph.
Resident Harold Lantsberry said: "It's quite ridiculous and I wondered at first whether it's some kind of joke. "I don't know which speed the council is going to try and enforce."
Manchester City Council has admitted that a mistake was made installing the signs, which were intended to reduce the speed limit in the road from 30mph to 20mph.
