Now scientists believe they have an answer: new research confirms that they do both - at the same time.
By observing elephants moving across a hi-tech track, the team found the hefty creatures run with their front legs but walk with their back legs.

Only worth sixpence, but it cost one man his job

He only misplaced a single letter but it was one “L” of a costly mistake for the general manager of the Chilean mint.
Gregorio Iñiguez and several other employees have reportedly been sacked after they minted a set of 50-peso coins with the name of their nation spelt incorrectly.
The coins, worth six pence, were released into circulation with C-H-I-I-E stamped on the front where it should read C-H-I-L-E.
The coins have since become collectors' items and the mint says it has no plans to take them out of circulation.
People have reportedly been hoarding the coins in the hope their value rises.
But the mistake has cost the mint's general manager, Gregorio Iniguez, and several other employees, their jobs.
It is not the first embarrassing blunder at the Chilean mint. Last October, someone there sold a rare medal, which should have been housed in the institution's museum, to a coin collector.
A month later, another medal - this one bearing the face of the country's then President Michelle Bachelet - was inadvertently sold on the open market.

Russia farmer planting more then potatoes in his field

A Russian farmer has been convicted of planting landmines around his field to ward off trespassers.
Alexander Skopintsev, from the eastern region of Primorye near China's border, laid the three devices on his land after building them in his garage.
The 73-year-old had apparently been concerned about the frequent theft of potatoes from his farm.
He was arrested after an intruder set off one of the tripwire-style mines in August and was injured in the blast.
Skopintsev was convicted for the unlawful construction and storage of weapons and received a two-and-a-half year suspended sentence.
"Skopintsev testified that he had prepared the explosive devices to protect his garden against thieves," regional prosecutors said in a statement reported by RIA-Novosti news agency.

'Watering Can Man' leaves 3,000 watering cans to niece

Hilary Taylor was left a rather unusual part of her uncle’s estate when he died – 3,000 watering cans.
Ken Stickland – known as Watering Can Man – filled his shed, greenhouse, garden and even an entire floor of his house with his beloved collection.
Mr. Stickland – who died last month, aged 78 – even kept a meticulous record of every watering can, including many he made himself.
‘I have heard of people collecting teapots or stamps... but this?’
‘He was such a fascinating person. He started his collection in 2001 but I have no idea why. I suppose it kept his mind occupied and he had something to get up for.
‘Nearly every charity shop in the area knew him because he was always looking for watering cans.
‘He did not have a favorite, he just loved them all. Sometimes he would come home to find people had left them on his doorstep.’
Mrs Taylor admits she doesn’t know what to do with the collection and may sell it in aid of charity.
One particular can will be always special though – as her uncle’s ashes are held in it.

The 49-year-old patient, from Voronezh, Russia - who now tips the scales at a trimmer 19 stones - is literally half his old weight.
Petr - seen here before and after the four hour op - says he was so fat he could no longer sleep on his back, could barely walk and had abandoned any hope of a sex life.

Surgeon reprimanded for swearing at obese patient
An experienced surgeon who told a severely obese patient she was "going on a f***ing diet" has been reprimanded over his foul mouth and for removing the patient from a waiting list after she complained.
In a decision issued today, Health and Disability Commissioner Ron Paterson found the gastro-intestinal surgeon breached the patient's code of rights and showed no understanding of the vulnerability of his gastric bypass patient.
The 44-year-old Maori patient saw the surgeon last April after she had repeatedly failed at dieting.
When she said she preferred the word "lifestyle" to "diet", the doctor told her she was "bullshitting" herself and was "going on a f***ing diet".

Woman posts 'little' penis pictures
A Swedish 18-year-old was charged with harassment for posting pictures of her ex-boyfriend's "little" penis on lampposts in his neighborhood, officials say.
Court papers say the teenager posted the pictures, complete with the "tiny" description and the 24-year-old ex-lover's name and phone number, after he ended their brief relationship to date another woman.
The newspaper said the woman also allegedly posted pictures of her ex-beau's new squeeze with a note labeling her a "slut" and threw eggs at her ex-boyfriend's car.
Police said the woman admitted to them that she knew her activities were illegal.

A Port St. Lucie first-grade student was handcuffed and committed to a mental health facility because of her classroom behavior, and her parents are furious that the school took such extreme measures.
Mickey Shalansky explained Wednesday what he said happened to his 6-year-old daughter at Parkway Elementary.
"She couldn't put her in two handcuffs because her wrists are that small, so she put them both in the same handcuff and left marks on my daughter's arms," Shalansky said.

Rail crossing hero moves van and barely avoids train

Dramatic Video footage from Argentina has captured the tense moment when a small van got stuck on the train tracks as a train approached.
It happened as a series of cars were filmed going round lowered safety barriers meant to halt traffic for the oncoming train.
The footage shows a passenger on the back of a motorcycle jumping off to push the van out of the way of the path of the train.
He only just manages to get the vehicle off the tracks in time, and then jumps back, narrowly missing being hit by the train himself.
After the incident the man exchanges a triumphant "high five" gesture with the motorcyclist, who hugs him with relief.
