Burglar cuts hole in roof, but Big Screen TV doesn't fit

Des Moines police say a burglar cut a hole into the roof of TNT Vietnamese restaurant, dropped down for some loot and escaped through the same hole.

Police say the burglar got $200 from a cash register but apparently couldn't get back out of the building with a big-screen TV from the restaurant. The TV was damaged in the effort. The front and back doors remained locked.

Soldier thwarts bank robber

An Army staff sergeant home on leave in southwest Florida chased down a suspected bank robber and held him until authorities arrived.

Officials say Eddie Peoples was at a Bank of America branch in Sarasota with his two young sons when a man walked in with a handgun and demanded cash from the tellers. Peoples sprang into action after the man threatened his sons. Peoples left his sons inside while he ran to his vehicle to block the suspect's car in the parking lot. The suspect got out and pointed his gun at Peoples, who twisted the man's arm, stripped away the gun and slammed him to the ground. Sarasota Sheriff's deputies arrested 34-year-old Matthew Rogers.

The gun turned out to be a toy.

Burglar was arrest with family help

The Meek family of Des Moines discovered a car prowl in progress and then captured the suspect and held him for police.

The suspect, Schuyler Keith Paxson, 18, of Des Moines, is charged with three counts of third-degree burglary. He is in the Polk County Jail today, held on $12,000 bond.

Police said a member of David Meek’s family spotted someone going through Meek’s car shortly before 7 a.m... The prowler reportedly made eye contact with one of Meek’s teenage children and ran. Family members gave chase, caught up with him and escorted him back to the house.

Police were told that the suspect had a bag over his shoulder when he ran. Officers looked through yards in the area and found a bag. They later discovered there were other victims in the area. At last report there were three police cases associated with Paxson’s arrest.

Man on phone says that he's wanted, is arrested

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says a man who talked loudly in his motel room about being a fugitive was arrested after other guests turned him in.

It happened at the Traveler's Motel in Delmar. Deputies say guests there heard a man yelling during a phone conversation that there was a warrant for his arrest and called police.

Thirty-two-year-old Richard R. Vermalyea of Rehoboth Beach, Del. was arrested and ordered held on two open warrants in Cecil County, Md. one was for failure to appear in a theft case and other for violation of probation.

Man fakes attack to avoid child support

Authorities in Hernando County Florida say a man made up a story about being robbed and stabbed in hopes of missing an upcoming court date.

Deputies say 51-year-old Michael Cherubino admitted he cut himself with a piece of glass. Earlier, he had told authorities two men attacked him at his home, stabbed him in the stomach and stole about $4,000.

Cherubino told authorities he had hoped the injury would send him to the hospital so he would miss a court date and have an excuse not to pay $4,000 he owed in child support.

Instead, he was issued a notice to appear on charges of giving a false report to law enforcement.

Man sold tobacco products to boys after spankings

Authorities in Lexington, South Carolina say they arrested a 50-year-old convenience store clerk who sold cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to boys after they let him spank them.

Lexington County deputies said that they started investigating Terrence Bryant after the father of a 12-year-old boy found him with a pack of Newport cigarettes earlier this month.

Detectives say Bryant sold the boy cigarettes at least five times from his pickup truck, spanking the child in the parking lot over his clothes.

Deputies say Bryant also sold tobacco to two 15-year-old boys after spanking them.

Bryant is charged with three counts of lewd act upon a child under age 16. He is awaiting a bond hearing and deputies say he doesn't have an attorney yet.

Burglar used a bike to carry a Big Screen TV

South Daytona Police says it wasn't hard to spot the burglary suspect. He was riding his bicycle, carrying a 59-inch television. A bike patrol officer says 23-year-old Steven Long had wedged the television between the handlebars and his lap as he pedaled along.

According to reports, he panicked when he saw the police officer; he ditched the bike and the stolen television. Police caught up with Long in a nearby backyard and arrested him.

Officers spoke with a resident who reported a burglary. They said they'd been asleep when someone pried open a side door and took the TV. They identified the one Long had been carrying as theirs.

Long now faces several charges, including felony theft.

Man pulls out pipe, smokes unknown substance while driving next to Sheriff's Officer

If you don’t want to get arrested for possession of narcotic equipment, don’t pull out a pipe and pass it to your passenger while driving next to a law enforcement officer.

An Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office major contacted dispatch to tell them he was at the intersection of Henderson Beach Road and U.S. Highway 98. Beside him was a black Honda Accord with two people, a man and a woman, and they appeared to be passing back and forth a pipe containing an unknown substance. The woman appeared to be holding a section of tin foil and a lighter while the man used the pipe to smoke the substance.

The driver, identified as Christopher R. Gay, 22, of Destin consented to a search by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, admitted he used the pipe to smoke drugs.

A check of their tag revealed it was not registered to any vehicle.

A woman was seriously injured Sunday afternoon in what state officials said appears to be the worst sturgeon accident so far this year on the Suwannee River.

Tina Fletcher's right leg was broken by a jumping sturgeon, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Fletcher, 25, of Cross City, was riding on a 16-foot-long Freedom Craft air prop airboat traveling at about 10 mph when the fish jumped and hit her leg, Parker said. Witnesses said that the fish appeared to weigh between 60 and 75 pound and slid back into the water following the collision.

Church fined $100 per branch for excessive tree pruning

Every two to three years, Eddie Sales trims and prunes the crape myrtles at his church, Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church.

But this year, the city of Charlotte cited the church for improperly pruning its trees.

"We always keep our trees trimmed back because you don't want to worry about them hanging down in the way," said Sales, a church member.

The church was fined $100 per branch cut for excessive pruning, bringing the violation to $4,000.

"I just couldn't believe it when I heard about it," Sales said. "We trim our trees back every three years all over our property, and this is the first time we have been fined."

The fine will be dropped if the church replaces each of the improperly pruned trees,

Charlotte has had a tree ordinance since 1978, and when trees are incorrectly pruned or topped, people can be subject to fines

Transgender teen crowned prom queen

Transgender teen Andrew Viveros, 17, was crowned prom queen on Friday at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale.

Viveros, a graduating senior at McFatter Technical High School in Davie, said he wasn't sure he would win.

"Then they called my name and I was in complete shock," said Viveros, a Davie resident and president of the school's Gay-Straight Alliance. Viveros said some students campaigned against him but others praised him for his courage.

Cops with a nose for pot

Police seized marijuana plants during a late-night search of a Boynton Beach townhouse, arresting the suspected grower after a brief chase, authorities said.

Two uniformed officer’s patrolling the Pelican Pointe townhouse complex, got a whiff of marijuana near the pool area, according to an arrest report.

One officer reportedly saw Jesse Duncans, 26, smoking the drug in the rear patio of a townhouse. Several marijuana plants were growing in pots on a table next to him, the report said.

The officers walked up and identified themselves, Duncans then bolted inside with marijuana in his hands. Officers chased him inside, afraid he would destroy the evidence, police said. They stopped him in one of the bedrooms, where police saw more plants inside a closet, emitting a "fresh smell of marijuana," police said.

Police found 40 marijuana plants, weighing 361 grams, the report said.
