Small Bits of News You Didn’t Know you Needed

Pa. man walks 25 miles to court for DUI sentencing
A man facing sentencing on a drunken-driving conviction couldn't get a ride to court. So he start walking. And walking.
Stephen Shoemaker was scheduled to appear at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for sentencing.
Shoemaker, 33, of Shippensburg, doesn't have a car or driver's license. So he started hoofing it to the courthouse at dawn. He kept walking for about 25 miles in 90-plus-degree heat.
Shoemaker arrived about 3:30 p.m. - after a detour to a hospital, where he was treated for dehydration.
Judge Edward Guido had issued an arrest warrant when Shoemaker failed to appear. But he agreed to defer sentencing until July. Guido said he hesitated only because "that means he'll have to walk back to Shippensburg."
Deputy Public Defender Anthony Adams volunteered to give Shoemaker a ride home.

Man accused of stealing bus after friend's arrest
Conn. State troopers say an Enfield man was charged with stealing a school bus after telling officers he needed a ride home after a friend's arrest.
Peter Smario is due in Norwich Superior Court on June 19 on charges of larceny, drug possession, criminal trespass and possession of a weapon in a vehicle, police said.
Police said several drivers reported a yellow school bus driving erratically and hitting construction cones on Route 2 in Colchester. The vehicle had been taken from a nearby bus yard.
Police said Smario was carrying heroin, a knife and a large amount of cash when they arrested him during the Thursday night incident. Troopers say the 28-year-old told them his friend had been arrested earlier that evening, leaving him without a ride home.

The most stupid thief?
This is the moment when a mugger provided police with an unmistakable clue to his identity - by admiring his reflection in the lens of a CCTV camera.
The image shows the thief moments after he had stolen a £200 silver necklace and bracelet from a 16-year-old boy.
Rather than escape, he decided to try on the jewelry, apparently unaware - or unconcerned - that he was being filmed by the camera he was gazing into.

Man planned to drive around until sobering up
Before that happens, he hits car, ambulance
Police have heard many excuses from drunk drivers over the years.
A man told police he was driving around until he sobered up enough to go home when he was involved in a three-vehicle crash in which a MONOC ambulance overturned at the Route 70 circle, police said.
Edward T. Defreitas, 36, of Timberline Road was driving his 2003 Nissan 350 which struck a car, the ambulance and then a utility pole, which snapped at the base, leaving live wires on the car and in the road.
