Small Bits of News You Didn’t Know you Needed

Parolee takes stolen car to parole office
Marcus George complied with the law when he reported to a parole officer shortly after his release from prison. Police said he erred, however, when he drove to the meeting in a stolen car.
George, 20, was released on parole last week after serving time on burglary and theft convictions.
Prosecutor Nicole Pugh said George and a friend went to a Pine Bluff dealership, where they took a Toyota on a test drive and didn't return it. The pair also reportedly stole a Dodge Charger from a dealership in Sherwood - the car George was driving when he showed up to meet with his parole officer in Pine Bluff. George was arrested at the parole office on suspicion of theft by receiving and theft of property.

Skunks reek havoc under family’s home
A family's dream home became a stinky nightmare after skunks moved in. They chewed underneath Kerry McCullough's house in Sheffield Lake, about 20 miles west of Cleveland, and started their own family.
The squatters went unnoticed until the heat was turned on last winter. The McCulloughs' house uses hot water heat with exposed pipes running under the floors. When a skunk brushed up against the pipes, it would spray.
"It would be 30 degrees, and I'd have the windows open," said Karen McCullough, 46. "I'd go to the grocery store and people would say, 'It smells like skunk.'"
What's really foul is how much damage the critters can cause. The McCulloughs had to replace doors and walls and take their kitchen apart, for a total cost of about $75,000.
Kerry McCullough said at least his insurance doesn't stink: It covered most of the bills.

Police catch man who hid marijuana around penis
Getting caught with marijuana by police is bad enough. But the drug arrest of John Christopher Williams, 34, was particularly embarrassing.
Williams has a lengthy criminal record and had failed to show up for court dates more than once, leading to a warrant for his arrest. When police found and arrested him they didn’t find any drugs on him and Williams didn’t say anything.
It was only when he was being checked in to prison that guards discovered nine grams of marijuana wrapped around his penis. Williams says it was all a misunderstanding.
He appeared yesterday in Dartmouth Provincial Court under charges of smuggling drugs into prison.

Man brandishing palm frond and flip flops tries to rob store
It's an attempted robbery you might not believe. Surveillance video shows a man using part of a palm tree to hold up a store in DeLand. Even though he didn't use a traditional weapon, he'll still face the same charges. How a customer responded to the threat was also unusual. He chased him out of the store with a bar stool.Police said it ranks near the top as one of the oddest things they've ever seen. But the palm frond wasn't the robber's only weapon. He was also brandishing a pair of flip-flops. Gelando Olivieri burst through the door of V and F Discount Beverage threatening the clerk with the sharp end of a palm frond.

Teen blames pet gerbil for 3-car accident
A teenager is blaming her pet gerbil for a car crash in Springville Tuesday.
Officers say the 17-year-old girl was driving her Jeep on Highway 51. She veered off the road and slammed into a car stopped along the shoulder. That car hit another, which pinned a woman between the two vehicles and struck another person.
Both people went to the hospital, police say, with broken legs.
The Jeep driver said her pet gerbil, also in the car, escaped from its cage. She tried to catch the pet and did not realize she had swerved.
