Man wrecks clients Jaguar

Police said an Iowa City man got drunk and wrecked a car he was supposed to be working on.

According to Johnson County Sheriff’s Office criminal complaints, Jacob R. Stein, 31, was involved in a single-car rollover on Interstate 80. Police said Stein had driven a 2002 Jaguar from the Wildwood Bar and Saloon on Herbert Hoover Highway and then wrecked the car.

Police said Stein provided a weak preliminary breath test of .120 blood-alcohol content at the scene of the crash. A blood test at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics showed his blood-alcohol content was actually .240, three times the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle in Iowa.

Stein was arrested and charged with drunken driving and operating a vehicle without the owners consent.

Dentist gets surprise package

A New York City orthodontist opened a mysterious package that had been delivered to his dental clinic and was stunned to find that it contained 31-pound bale of marijuana.

The package was delivered by UPS at around 3 p.m. Friday. It was postmarked from Katy, Texas, a suburb of Houston. The package appeared to be addressed from a person with the same last name as Lyons, although he says they aren't related.

Lyons says he called police as soon as he realized what he had in his hands. Then, he posed with the bale for newspaper photographers.

Woman, 66, tackles robber

A 66-year-old bank customer, courageous because she says she is dying of cancer, tackled a would-be robber Friday and restrained her until deputies arrived, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

When deputies asked the customer why she intervened, she replied she "was dying of cancer, figured she had nothing to lose and didn't want to see her [the robbery suspect] get away with it," said sheriff's spokesperson Mike Jachles.

Reached by telephone Friday afternoon, the customer, Helen Dunsford, told the Sun Sentinel: "The FBI has asked me not to talk to you. Let the facts be stated by the police department, and let it go."

Asked if she was OK following the altercation, Dunsford replied: "I'm fine. Thank you."

FBI Special Agent Michael Leverock urged citizens to avoid confronting robbers. The most they should do, he said, is to serve as "good witnesses," but said authorities considered the woman's actions "selfless and brave."

The robbery suspect was identified by the FBI as Renee Lee Green, 32. She was being held without bond in a Broward Jail.

Oregon Man Says Burglary Happened At Orlando Mall

An Oregon man says thieves stole electronic files worth $1 million from his Dodge Charger that was parked at an Orlando mall.

According to a police report, Griffiths said thieves punched out a lock and took a number of items, including Bose head phones, a checkbook, a portable ionizer, credit cards, his passport, work papers, computer hardware and the electronic files. The total loss listed on the report totaled $1,011,554.

Griffiths told police he used his key-less entry remote to get inside the car and didn't notice the items missing until he left the mall. He then returned to the mall and called police.

Woman Found Naked In Car

Martin County sheriff's deputies pulled over Charlene Johnson on suspicion of DUI after they spotted her car weaving in and out of the lane. Deputies said they approached Johnson's car and found her naked and crying in the driver's seat.

According to the arrest report, Johnson told deputies she was crying because she had a fight with her boyfriend in West Palm Beach. When asked why she was naked, Johnson replied, "I don't know."

The report said Johnson struggled to put her clothes back on and had trouble standing when deputies asked her to step out of the car. Deputies said they had to catch her from falling into the road several times.

Deputies said they found marijuana and two prescription pill bottles during a search of Johnson's car. She was arrested on charges of DUI, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

International Pillow Fight Day was celebrated around the world at the weekend, marking the fourth year of the glorious annual feather-fest.
Cities around the globe were filled with hundreds of thousands of pillow-brandishing types for the event, from New York's Union Square to Nelson's Column in London and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.
Started by The Urban Playground Movement, International Pillow Fight Day sees participants smack each other around with their feather-filled weapons.
The organization’s mission is to make more use of public spaces and ultimately replace the world's couch-potato habits.

Car hits downtown building

Traffic in the downtown core slowed to a halt today after a car leaving Hanson Memorial Parking Garage sped up and crashed into the wall of the building across the road.

The accident occurred this afternoon. The male driver, the only person in the vehicle, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Parking attendant Ed Harpell said the man paid his parking ticket and was approaching the sidewalk. There were two pedestrians on the sidewalk, he said, and the driver nearly hit them.
"I think maybe he tried to break, and then he hit the accelerator and he just shot right across the street," Harpell said.
Police arrived on the scene quickly, and secured the area. City engineers are currently investigating the struck building at 166 Wellington to ensure it is structurally sound.

Toddler craving fries found at Wal-Mart

A San Francisco Bay area toddler has been reunited with his mother after apparently stepping out for a bite to eat.

The 2-year-old from Pleasanton was found in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart wearing only a white T-shirt and diaper around 3 a.m. Thursday.

Pleasanton police Sgt. Maria Munayer says he told investigators he wanted McDonald's french fries. There is a McDonald's inside the Wal-Mart.

The boy appears to have awoken in the middle of the night, opened the front door of his apartment and headed out, crossing four lanes of a usually busy thoroughfare. Police say the knob on the front door is set low and automatically unlocks the deadbolt.

His mother called 911 when she awoke around 6 a.m. to report her child missing.

Police say there is no basis for any criminal charges against his mother.

April Fool's prank costs Ill. teen $150 in tickets

A 16-year-old Bloomington, Illinois girl has been given $150 in tickets after the worried victims of her April Fool's Day prank called police.

Authorities say the girl texted her friend and cousin Friday morning and said she'd been robbed and shot in the foot.

The pair called police, who rushed to a home where they found the 16-year-old safe. She hadn't been robbed or shot.

The girl received a $100 ticket for disorderly conduct and a $50 ticket for truancy because she wasn't in school Friday.

Police say she could have been criminally charged with filing a false police report.

Bloomington police spokesperson Dave White says the friend and cousin did the right thing by calling police. They haven't been cited or charged.

Man finds it difficult to sell ferry

A man who bought a used 300-foot Staten Island Ferry to convert it into a waterborne dorm for New York college students is drowning in a bad case of buyer's remorse.

Former marina owner Jacques Guillet bought the orange ferry for $162,000 at a closed-bid auction three years ago.

But he's failed to find an affordable parking spot along the area's waterfront for the 3,500-passenger boat, named the Gov. Herbert H. Lehman. The city wanted to charge him $1,000 a day.

Now he's paying $6,000 a month to dock it in Staten Island. Any buyer would need to deal with complicated logistics, including the boat's size.

There were no bids when he advertised it on eBay.

Police arrest man who escaped by fax

Spanish police say they have arrested a man who twice escaped from custody by having his wife send fake faxes ordering his release.

Fifty-seven-year-old Jose Carlos Serna was taken into custody at his home in San Lorenzo del Escorial, a suburb north of Madrid, on Friday, while hiding in a hollowed-out sofa, police said.

In December, he was in a cell at Arganda del Rey courthouse awaiting trial when officers got a fax purportedly from a regional court. It was followed by a phone call purportedly from a court official, corroborating the release order.

Authorities tried to verify the order, but their calls went unanswered. When a second call was received confirming Serna's release, he was freed to a waiting taxi.

Police said Serna used the same trick to escape from Valdemoro jail in October.

Fake massage parlor inspector demands rubdown

Authorities in Newport Beach California say a man is charged with demanding a rubdown and $200 while pretending to be a massage parlor inspector.

Orange County prosecutors charged Edward Justin LaPorte with felony burglary and misdemeanor counts of impersonating a peace officer and firearm violations. The 47-year-old faces arraignment Friday in Newport Beach.

Investigators say LaPorte is a former police officer from Illinois. They say he was wearing a badge when he entered the Golden Spa massage parlor in Lake Forest and told the manager he was investigating a complaint.

Prosecutors say he then complained of back pain, and a masseuse gave him a back rub before LaPorte asked for a frontal massage, which was refused.

Teen sentenced for dangerous pranks

A judge in New Jersey has sentenced a 16-year-old to 13 months of intensive supervision for pulling off a series of pranks last year.

The teen admitted dialing 911 in October and telling authorities he was inside a closet at a restaurant in Gloucester County because a gunman was going from room to room shooting customers.

Officers from half dozen police departments arrived at the restaurant and found just people eating.

The teen also admitted using Facebook to threaten students and teachers at Clearview High School, where he's a student.

The boy won't go to jail but will be in court supervision until his 18th birthday.

'Vodka Tampon'

Police in southern Germany warned this week of a dangerous new form of alcohol abuse among teens – using tampons soaked in vodka to get drunk quickly and hide the smell. The practice poses grave health risks, they said.

Police in the Baden-Württemburg city of Tuttlingen responded Tuesday to growing online chatter among teenagers that they could become intoxicated using the vodka tampons without having alcohol on their breath.

This is not true, police said, denying that it was an effective way to get drunk. They also warned girls that the alcohol could damage vaginal walls and increase the risk of infection. Boys have reportedly also been using tampons anally.

Teen girl made mom buy car at gunpoint

Florida officials say a 17-year-old girl forced her mother at gunpoint to buy her a car.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the teen was charged with battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and unlawful possession of a firearm by a person younger than 18 years old. The teen is at a juvenile detention facility and is not being identified because of her age.

Authorities say the girl pointed a gun at her mother and pistol-whipped her.

The mother said she did not want to press charges because her daughter had been accepted to several Ivy League schools.

Authorities say the gun had been stolen from a Lee County Port Authority officer last year. The teen was not charged in that crime.

Teens steal keys to stayed the weekend inside school

Authorities in Manitowoc Wis. say two 17-year-old high school students have been arrested after they were caught living in their school over a weekend.

Manitowoc police say the teenagers stayed after hours in Friday, Mar. 18, and stole the janitor's keys, which gave them access to the whole school.

Police Capt. Jason Freiboth says the teens allegedly broke into several lockers, stole personal items and stole food from the cafeteria.

He says police got a tip the teens were in the school. The teens were already wanted for questioning in connection with some retail thefts.

When arrested March 21, both teens told police they used the school as a place to stay because they didn't live at home. They have been in jail since then.

Man died by “Sex”

A Malawian man who collapsed and died while having sex with a hooker was killed by “sexual sweetness”, a police spokeswoman said.

Newspapers in that country say Fletcher Jere picked the hooker from the Ndirande suburb of the capital, Blantyre, “to quench his libido”.

But he suddenly collapsed and fell off a bed after a steamy sex romp with the prostitute.

Police spokeswoman Edina Ligowe said that “Jere died of too much sexual excitement and sweetness.

“The sex worker will not be prosecuted because she committed no crime by being too sweet for the man.”

Medical experts say the man may have died of cardiogenic shock -- a condition in which the heart fails to supply blood to the rest of the body. This can be caused by “dangerous heart rhythms”.

Most likely, the experts say, Jere had an underlying heart defect.
