Cremator dumps half-burned bodies to save fuel
HONG KONG (Reuters) - China's worst fuel crunch in years has led a crematorium to dump half-burnt corpses to try saving on diesel costs, a Hong Kong newspaper said on Friday.
Villagers in Hengyang County, in the southern province of Hunan, discovered the practice when an "unbearable stench" started coming from the site, and tried to block a road on Wednesday to stop funeral vehicles from delivering more bodies.
The village sent people to investigate the smell and the South China Morning Post said they saw "crematorium workers putting half-burnt human remains and organs in plastic bags and throwing them into a nearby ditch."
"As the price of diesel rose, we saw more and more bags thrown out from the crematorium," the paper quoted Xiao Gaoyi, a village representative and one of the witnesses, as saying.

Teenager microwaved, tumble dried and froze hamster
A 14-year-old boy subjected a hamster to a half-hour ordeal in which he put her in a freezer, a tumble-dryer and a washing machine before she died, a court heard yesterday. The RSPCA described the teenager's treatment of the animal called Poppy as "an act of senseless cruelty against a defenceless animal". The youth admitted causing unnecessary suffering to Poppy today and was given a 12-month supervision order as well as being banned from keeping any animals for four years.
Speaking after the hearing, RSPCA inspector Mike Pugh said: "What this boy did was horrendous. "It took over half an hour for the hamster to die, after first being frozen, heated in a revolving drum and finally drowned in the washing machine. She suffered severe pain and mental stress."Mr Pugh said the animal had lesions to her feet and torn claws. A vet concluded these were most likely caused by frostbite, trying to climb out of the freezer or hang on to the inside of the dryer drum.
A post-mortem examination showed the hamster died of severe respiratory or cardiovascular damage.

Whole village victim of credit card scam
An entire village may have fallen victim to an elaborate international credit card scam, police believe. Hundreds of people living in Houghton on the Hill, Leicestershire, are thought to have reported cash being withdrawn from their accounts. The withdrawals have been made from countries including Australia, India and the Philippines. The owner of the village shop called in the police after suspecting fraudsters were targeting his customers. Jim Funnell has run the business for 30 years. He was shocked that customers had been caught up in the scam simply because they had bought goods at his shop and garage. Mr Funnell has now changed the debit and credit card machines in his shop.
