Man gets stuck in a hole while trying to get his phone back

Walking to a friend’s house, Jared Medeiros was set upon by a group of men who left him battered and bruised.
 .
 .
And, adding insult to injury, his phone was then chucked through a manhole cover by the attackers.
But the 21-year-old refused to accept the phone was gone and decided it would be a good idea to stick his head down the drain to retrieve it and call police.
It was not a good idea. He became stuck fast – and the alarm was raised only after he had been in there screaming for about 40 minutes.
‘I was concerned but I was also laughing – it was funny!’ said Brianna Mooney, 16, who called the emergency number
Mr. Medeiros was freed by firefighters, who spent hours trying to pull him out.
He said he had been beaten and kicked by four men.
‘I don’t understand why they would sit and take pictures,’ said Mr. Medeiros. ‘That kind of p****s me off.’

Eating fish can be bad for you

A couple endured a health nightmare after tiny worms with teeth began eating through their bodies. It is the first time humans have been infected by the parasite in Australia.
Alfred hospital infectious disease physician Andrew Fuller said that when the couple ate the fish, believed to be a black bream, they also ingested the gnathostomiasis larvae.
"The worms are 1-3mm long and have got these sharp little teeth and they can go anywhere they like in the body," Dr Fuller said.
 .
 .
The worm works its way around the human body until it dies or is killed by the immune system.
"They move under the skin and cause itchy lumps that can make you feel sick - and it can be very hard to diagnose."
The infected couple suffered muscle pain, fevers, vomiting and their skin began to look like orange peel.
They were given antibiotics and have recovered.
The worms can stay in a human for 15 years, leaving people chronically ill. They can make their way into the brain, other organs and the spinal cord. "They eat your tissues," Dr Fuller said.

Now that's a tumor

Man asks for help to remove 80kg tumor
His 80kg tumor is record-breaking, but the size of his smile is what's really remarkable about Nguyen Duy Hai.
The 31-year-old Vietnamese man has had a tumor growing on his right leg since soon after he was born.

Despite having an amputation at the knee 14 years ago, he still has an 80kg, 1m-wide growth. "I can't do anything, I can only sit and lie down," he said in his home in the town of Da Lat in the country's Central Highlands.
The tumor is the largest ever documented in Vietnam, Vu Van Thach, head of examination department of Hanoi tumor hospital, he said.
Hai's family is too poor to afford another operation after the amputation in 1997 failed to stop the growth, and now he is appealing for funds to afford medical help.

German surgeons remove huge tumor
Specialist surgeons performed this j-awesome transformation of a 21-year-old patient - after removing an astonishing six-kilo tumor from her mouth.
The Ethiopian-born woman - identified only as Tsehay - was so deformed by the 10-centimeter wide tumor she could barely eat or swallow water.

Lead surgeon Peter Cornelius from Bamberg, Germany, explained: "The operation to remove the tumor took three hours. It was complicated as so much of the lower face was disfigured by it. Only then, were we able to reconstruct her face."
The young woman faces more reconstructive surgery to rebuild her face, but said she was delighted by the surgery. "The doctors not only saved my life - they have given me a future as well," she said.

Lakeland man digs a pool finds trash dump in back yard

Brian Dyer was tired of taking his wife and kids to water parks in Orlando. He thought it would be much easier to dig a pool in his backyard.
When the pool company started excavating, it began bringing up load after load of trash. Metal, plastic, bottles, and who knows what else. It turns out that somewhere along the line someone had used their lot as an illegal dump site.
.
.

.
It is unclear how big the problem is. The junk could be buried under the Dyer's home in the Oak Run subdivision in North Lakeland. It may even extend to other parts of their neighborhood.
One of the biggest issues is: who is going to pay to clean up the mess? The company that developed the land is out of business. The builder and Polk County say they are not liable. That leaves Dyer holding the trash bag.

Scissors left in woman for three years by surgeons

The routine op should have been a snip - but Veronika Cruz, 35, was left in agony for three years after bungling surgeons left a huge pair of scissors inside her.
The surgeons had left the eight-inch long scissors behind during an operation to remove her ovaries in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
.
.
But doctors dismissed her complaints that something was wrong until she collapsed in agony years later and this X-ray revealed the truth.
A spokesperson for the Sao Paulo medical council said: 'There was damage to her intestine and her other ovary, which had to be removed. We are investigating.'

Happy to be hairy

World's hairiest girl happy to put
'wolf girl' jibes behind her.

Little Supatra Sasuphan claims being officially recognized as the hairiest girl in the world has boosted her confidence.
Supatra had been teased her entire life because of a rare genetic condition causing thick hair to grow all over her face.
Two years ago she was tormented by other children calling her 'monkey face' and 'wolf girl'.
It often left her in tears because of strangers stopping in the street to point at her.
But since then ten-year old Supatra - nicknamed Nat - has been named the 'hairiest girl in the world' and amazingly, her new-found fame has helped her become one of the most popular girls in her school.
Supatra, from Pranakom, Thailand, says: 'I'm very happy to be in the Guinness World Records. All I did was answered a few questions about myself and then they gave it to me.'

Doctors dismissed her cancer as 'growing pains' four times

A teenage cheerleader had to have her leg amputated after doctors missed her cancer four times - telling her it was 'growing pains'.
Shannon Corr, 15, repeatedly visited GPs for over a two-month period complaining of agonizing pains in her right knee and shin that left her struggling to walk.
But doctors told her she was suffering from growing pains and told her to go home and rest.
After GPs refused to refer Shannon to hospital, her desperate mother Jeannetta Swift, 44, took her to A&E and pretended she had fallen over so she could be fully examined.
Doctors immediately spotted a problem, but by the time the rare bone cancer osteosarcoma was diagnosed it had spread to the soft tissue of Shannon's leg and surgeons were forced to amputate.

Warehouse worker lost hid job for excessive farting

A warehouse worker's job has gone with the wind - after he was sacked for excessive farting.
Daniel Cambridge, 27, was dismissed from Waterstones' warehouse after 35 complaints to management about him breaking wind.
Daniel insists his flatulence problem is a common side-effect of the antidepressant Citaloprama, which he has been taking for the past three weeks.
He has even highlighted that fact in the manufacturer's leaflet that comes with the prescription drug.
Daniel said yesterday: "I'm really annoyed. I can't believe I've been dismissed for passing wind. I know I'm not going to get my job back and I really liked it.
"I could understand them getting rid of me for fighting or something, but for passing wind is ridiculous.
"To me it's like having a disability and you wouldn't get rid of somebody with one arm or leg."

"I Have Been Prevented From Using My Own Driveway

A blind man wakes up one morning and finds that the entrances to his driveway have been blocked by cement barriers. That man is suffering from physical disabilities has lost his sight and about two months ago underwent a kidney transplant. Naturally he could not witness with his own eyes the convoy which included a City of Toronto truck containing concrete blocks and two police vehicles, which arrived in his house and with a large crane blocked the two entrances to his driveway.
The city workers who blocked the driveway told Kadosh that it was too wide and needs to be narrowed down. They claimed they would do the job and then send him the bill. “The driveway was always this wide, even before I moved in. I never received any letter or even a phone call from them and the supervisor refused to give me a copy of the letter that was sent to my old address. The whole thing was done so quickly, in approximately half an hour so I couldn’t respond, and it was done in an insulting way with police on the scene. By blocking the driveway, they essentially prevented me from having access to my own house.”
The City of Toronto refused to comment on the issue. John Filion, a Toronto city councilor representing the ward Kadosh lives in, told Shalom Life that the driveway in Kadosh’s house is illegal. “There were more than ten cars parked on that driveway, making the whole thing illegal. He was given repeated notices to correct the illegalities and had ignored them.” Filion could not comment on the way the matter was handled by city employees or why the letter was sent to Kadosh’s old address in Thornhill.
Kadosh said that he never parked more than two cars on his driveway and so the city’s allegations were untrue.

Rare ailment makes 13-year-old girl look like she’s 50

Zara Hartshorn has lipodystrophy, which makes her look old before her time
For some folks, turning 50 can trigger a midlife crisis. But due to a cruel blow of nature, Zara Hartshorn is forced to deal with it at the tender age of 13.
Though barely a teen, Zara has the appearance of a 50-year-old, something that saps her confidence just when most young people are striving for self-esteem. The Rotherham, England, teen suffers from lipodystrophy, a syndrome that causes the supporting fatty tissue under the skin to crumble even while the skin continues to grow, often at an alarming rate.
The hereditary condition is extremely rare — only about 2,000 people around the world have it — and for Zara, it has devastating social effects.

WWE Body Slam at NJ Acme Supermarket

Police in South Jersey are searching for a man who randomly attacked a shopper earlier this week at an Acme supermarket in Millville, NJ. The brutal attack was caught on store surveillance tape.
The victim's wife, Leslie Ritchie, describes the attack:
"He just came up from behind him, and it was like WWE (a wrestling organization). He picked him up and flipped him over, and his feet were in the air. He landed head first and then down on his back."
Bill Ritchie is recovering at Cooper University Hospital with numerous injuries, including a cracked skull, cracked vertebra and a ruptured spleen:
"I'm upset that I'm going to be out of work for three months 'cause some guy grabbed me and threw me. I'm sick over it."
Police say that after the assault, which took place last Sunday, the suspect finished his shopping, paid for his pre-cooked ham and then calmly walked out of the store.

Girl Sneezes Approximately 12,000 Times a Day

It’s that time of year when everyone seems to be coughing and sneezing, but for a 12-year-old girl from Virginia, she can’t sit for more than a few seconds without someone saying "bless you."
It’s so bad, on a regular day Lauren Johnson can sneeze more than 12,000 times a day.
"I can't stop sneezing. It goes off about eight to nine times a minute," Lauren said.
The condition, described as "machine gun sneezing," started about two weeks ago when the sixth-grader caught a cold and ever since then she’s been miserable.
"I know this is terrible for her," Lauren’s mom, Lynn Johnson said.
Lauren hasn’t been able to go to school and has visited six different doctors since the non-stop sneezing began. Although there’s no clear diagnosis, one neurologist told the family Lauren’s condition could be "irretraceable psychogenic disorder," which could be triggered by stress, according to the report.
"There's less than 40 cases ever documented ever in the entire world," Johnson said. "Nobody really knows how to treat it, what's going to work, and even in the cases where it might have worked or turned the sneezing off for awhile, a lot of times it comes back again and then you're right back to where you started," she added.
However, there are a few hours when Lauren does not sneeze."It turns off when she sleeps," her mom said. "Only in a deep REM sleep it turns off."

Casino winner wins $166 million then looses it

A Daytona Beach man who thought he was $166 million dollars richer after winning a slot machine jackpot at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa has agreed to a settlement with the casino.
Bill Seebeck had been playing the Bally Ultimate Party Spin slot machine for about a half-hour spending close to $80. The machine's bells began ringing and the numbers flashed the amount he'd won.
"$166,666,666.65. So I was screaming. I was up and around screaming...and I have high blood pressure but it went up really fast," he said.
Then the bad news came.
Casino workers told him the machine had malfunctioned and he wouldn't be paid any money. The casino has since reached an agreement with Seebeck.
.
In a statement, the casino says:
"The Seminole Hard Rock Casino has made an offer to William Seebeck, and he has accepted, recognizing that the slot machine he was playing on Sunday malfunctioned, in what can be best described to the layman as a "computer glitch." The maximum payout on the Ultimate Party Spin machine played by Seebeck is $99,000, although his bet of $1.50 at the time of the malfunction could have generated a maximum payout of only $2,500, with the right combination. Determination of a malfunction was made by representatives of the machine’s manufacturer and software provider, according to established gaming industry standards, with confirmation from an independent third-party laboratory analysis. The casino has opted to settle this matter for an undisclosed amount as a good faith gesture.

That Sinking Feeling

Man watches as his 4x4 disappears after getting stuck on beach.

It was a decision he must have instantly regretted. But the sea fisherman who drove his Honda 4×4 across mudflats had several agonizing hours to let it all sink in.
David Foster watched helplessly as his $25,000 car slowly disappeared in the wet sand… where it remained stuck fast and was swamped by the incoming tide. He had driven out on to the mudflats at Brean, Somerset, in search of the perfect afternoon fishing spot. ‘The vehicle was so stuck there was not even any point in calling for help,’ said beach warden Pete Williams. ‘The owner was distraught and wasn’t looking forward to telling his wife what had happened.’ Once the tide went out again, a recovery truck was called to pull the 15-year-old vehicle free in a two-hour retrieval operation, thought to have cost around $3,000. And that’s before any repair bills."

Extreme Poison Ivy Nightmare

The nice person was trimming her friends hedges, which were full of poison ivy.
By cutting the ivy, she was releasing the plant oil; then she was scraping her bare arms along the top of the hedge, which made little scratch in her arms, allowing the oil faster access.

Good News, Bad News Day.

The good news: Barry Shell won more than $4 million. The bad news: he ended up in jail.
Shell, from Brampton, Ont., picked up a check for $4,377,298, the top prize in the July 18 draw for the Lotto 6/49.
"I went to the store and checked my ticket on the self-serve ticket checker," Shell was quoted as saying in a news release from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
"As soon as I saw how much I had won, I grabbed a pen and signed my ticket."
On Monday afternoon, a smiling Shell was photographed holding up his check at the OLG headquarters on Dundas Street West in Toronto.
Then Shell strolled out of the building and into the hands of Peel Regional Police officers.
He was wanted on a six-year-old warrant for failing to appear, theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.
According to a spokesman for the OLG, every lottery winner undergoes a security check, and if anything is turned up during the course of the investigation the matter is turned over to the Ontario Provincial Police.
