The dog apparently stayed beside its friend for several hours until it was eventually removed by the authorities.

I truly believe that dog make friends.
Last march my dog was tragically killed while walking/playing with her best dog buddy, he saw her die and he went into major depression for a few weeks after the event. Did not eat, walk or play for the longest times. Now when the dog friend sees my husband and me he does not leave our sides and has a very protective attitude towards us.
I'm very sorry to hear about your dog, but that's an incredible story.
I too believe that Dogs do make “Real Friends”
